Pandas Pens CHINA A firsttime field guide to teaching English eBook David Ball Reviews

An extremely useful and thorough field guide for anyone thinking or planning to spend a year or more in China and perhaps even other countries in SA Asia as well. A tremendous comfort for anyone concerned about the do's and don'ts of undertaking such an adventure, especially for people living in a western society and from a western perspective. The book details every level needed for preparation for and arrival in China. No guesswork needed as Panda and Pens sets forth in a step by step fashion all one needs to know about getting through each level of bureaucratic red-tape, as well as practical advice from someone who has been there and done that, along with how to handle each level of the arrival process and integration into Chinese society, culture, and even language preparation. Special emphasis is provided for those planning to teach or conduct business in China. Thank you David for preparing such a great guide book for "going to China."
Insightful and entertaining!
Well written and userfriendly!
Highly recommend this to folk who have a desire to go and teach English in China...A lot of research has gone into this book..EXPERIENTIAL RESEARCH. Knowing the truth as experienced firsthand by the writer, David Ball HIMSELF while living in China. It is a great book and gives one much insights and info even some good points and thoughts of the importance relating to the Chinese Culture. China is in the news all over the World News and they are a major role player on the worlds economic platform. You can never know enough about China. The more you learn the more you need to learn. This is a great book and the timing of this book seems to be ordained at just the right time "as such a time like this" An excellent tool and kick start to get you going in your career as an English teacher in China. Richard Anderson.
The author describes this book as a "field guide for teaching English" in China and this is an accurate description. It is very detailed as a "field guide" must be.
If you are about to take up David's challenge (to teach English in China) then this book is a must read pre-departure. Pack it in your briefcase because it will be an on-going source of reference.
A field guide by definition is not something you would read for fun. But actually this one is very readable.
Aside from its prime purpose of helping the first time teacher, it also gives a sympathetic insight into Chinese culture as seen through the eyes of someone with a deep respect and love for the country and its people.
So beware if you are vaguely thinking about giving a year of your life or more to becoming a foreign English teacher. Reading this book may set the wheels in motion!
I think it is also a good read (selectively) for tourists and businessmen. Whilst there are many books written about Chinese culture this is current, comprehensive and I believe very insightful.
This is the authors first book but apart from knowledge and insight he also has good wordcraft and a well developed sense of humour. Hopefully there will be more from him in the future perhaps sharing some more of his own personal experiences...
A marvellous book; inspiring and instructive.
